Immediate Supply of Neoprene Expansion Joints for the M-30

Immediate Supply of Neoprene Expansion Joints for the M-30

In this conversation with David, a technical representative from Cacesa, we examine how we meet the demands of urban maintenance on high-traffic arteries like Madrid’s M-30. It is a project where the key to success lies in combining two essential factors: the compound’s wear resistance and the ability to deliver neoprene expansion joints within record timeframes of 24 to 48 hours.

M-30 Maintenance: Replacement of Old Joints

Next, Pedro and David address the issue of infrastructure deterioration in the capital and the type of solution the maintenance contract required for this ring road.

— We also have another project—another job you’ve worked on where you supplied your own products; in this case, I believe they are primarily elastomeric bearings—involving the M-30. Due to wear and tear over time, structural work was required to rectify existing issues, and you were asked to supply the materials. Tell us a bit about the M-30 infrastructure—we know what it is, of course—but also about the type of material you are planning to use for these upgrades.

— Yes; in this specific case on the M30, the work involves replacing bridge expansion joints—many of which are quite old. We supply the expansion joint assemblies designed to accommodate the various types of movement involved; there is a range of about ten models, complete with their anchoring systems. Essentially, the client—who handles the maintenance of the M30—places an order with us, and we are able to provide very rapid service.

Logistics management: Make-to-stock manufacturing and immediate delivery

There is no room for delays in urban maintenance contracts. This part of the interview explains the production strategy that enables neoprene expansion joints to be dispatched almost instantly.

— As I’ve asked before: for you, did this particular project present any technical challenges—whether due to weather conditions, the workload, or what you mentioned about having to deliver a large amount of material in a short time? I mean, did you encounter any technical issues with this project?

— Well, in this case, it’s straightforward, because ultimately, an expansion joint consists of a specific set of parts—perhaps 10 or 15 different types that have been around for years—and we usually manufacture them for stock. So, there are no technical hurdles involved; you simply take them from storage, load them onto the truck, and deliver them to the customer.

— Why does the company responsible for maintaining the M-30 choose you? Why you? What do they see in you that makes them… is it because of your stock, or the price, or because you’ve worked with them before and there’s a certain level of trust?

— Well, in this case, it’s a relatively new client, and I think we’re working with them because, in the expansion joint market, we are highly rated for quality, price, and service. Ultimately, that’s where we stand out: we provide a high-quality joint that withstands wear and tear exceptionally well, and we have it available at a reasonable price for delivery in under 24 hours.

Seasonal strategy: Catalog rotation since the 1980s

Working with neoprene and rubber requires adapting production to construction cycles. David details the inventory philosophy the company has maintained since its inception.

— So, when you say you keep these expansion joints in stock, it means that whenever there is spare capacity at the factory, you manufacture them—since there are 10 or 11 models that are consistently in demand—and store them; that way, when someone places an order, you can supply them immediately. In other words, if a project requires the material right away, you could deliver it the moment it is requested.

— That is indeed the case. Ever since we started manufacturing expansion joints—which, if I recall correctly, was back in the 80s or early 90s—we have always operated by maintaining stock. What does this allow us to do? Well, it means that during the months with lower turnover—the winter months, when weather conditions like rain or extreme cold prevent installation—we can continue manufacturing.

So, what happens? Well, in the summer—I mean, it is somewhat seasonal, although sales happen year-round since it’s an international market—the bulk of the work is geared toward the summer season, so we never stop working. As soon as we see a model running low, we immediately restock; this ensures we have a wide range of models available, allowing us to respond incredibly fast to orders of any size—whether it’s one unit or a hundred, they’re ready within 24 to 48 hours. Naturally, customers value that, as it makes great economic sense for them.

Two business models: Standardization vs. Custom manufacturing

The talk concludes by analyzing the difference between the supply of standardized neoprene expansion joints and the fabrication of rubber bearings made to specifications.

— Yes, the way I see it, there are two specialties: one involves items I can produce quickly—since the dimensions and specifications are already established, I can keep them in stock and supply them to you immediately. The other is the exact opposite: you need an elastomeric bearing with specific dimensions—sizes that aren’t already in stock and likely don’t exist elsewhere because you’re providing custom measurements. In that case, I manufacture it for you; I can’t deliver it immediately, but I can produce even very large sizes and get them to you quite quickly.

— Indeed, we work in both directions. The thing is, the situation with the joints is very straightforward because the model is always the same—there are 10 or 15 types, and that doesn’t change. Each joint corresponds to a specific type of movement; these are designs that have been standardized for years. While new joints do appear and get added to our production catalog, we follow the same approach: manufacture a batch, keep them in stock, fulfill orders, and so on.

Bearings, however, are a completely different story; they are essentially custom-made products. But what is the advantage here? Instead of keeping finished products in stock, we hold all the necessary materials to manufacture them in record time: paint, steel plates in various thicknesses (2, 3, 4, and 5 mm), rubber, and so on. One piece of new equipment we’ve installed is a refrigerated unit for pallets; this allows us to keep the mixture at the right temperature so it doesn’t expire or spoil during the summer months. This means we can always have—for instance—neoprene (which is highly temperature-sensitive) available in quantities ranging from 100 to 2,000 kilos, enabling us to quickly meet the needs of customers who use it.

Technical analysis: Neoprene preservation and thermal control

As David reveals in the interview, ensuring quality in the supply of neoprene expansion joints is not limited to stocking the finished product, but extends to maintaining the chain of custody for the raw material itself.

The importance of cooling in the neoprene mixture

Raw elastomer (neoprene or unvulcanized synthetic rubber) is a material highly sensitive to temperature fluctuations. If the mixtures exceed certain temperatures in storage during the summer, the vulcanization process may begin prematurely and uncontrollably, rendering the rubber unusable.

To prevent this, Cacesa has industrial refrigeration facilities where it stores tons of the mixture at a controlled temperature. This equipment enables:

  1. Prevent material degradation: Keeping the neoprene’s elastic properties intact for months.

  2. Immediate availability: Start the pressing and vulcanization process for custom bearings or additional joints right away, even during summer heatwaves.

  3. Performance guarantee: Ensuring that every joint delivered for the M-30 meets the wear resistance and durability standards required by European regulations.

Bridge Expansion Joints: Solution on the M-30

Bridge Expansion Joint Techniques on Madrid’s M-30

Madrid’s M-30 ring road is one of the busiest and most demanding road transport infrastructures in Spain. The constant flow of millions of vehicles daily, combined with the capital’s harsh weather conditions—characterized by marked temperature differences between winter and summer—causes significant wear and tear on its structures.

As part of the periodic maintenance and restructuring of bridges and walkways, the supply of bridge expansion joints is essential for correcting deviations, absorbing thermal expansion in the concrete, and ensuring the safety of the roadway.

The vital function of bridge expansion joints on the M-30

Expansion joints are essential components of any bridge or viaduct. Their primary function is to allow for relative movement between two parts of a structure—caused by temperature fluctuations, heavy traffic, or ground settlement—while maintaining continuity of the riding surface.

In urban maintenance projects such as those on the M-30, replacing old or deteriorated joints prevents:

  • Water and de-icing salt infiltration: Protecting internal concrete reinforcement and bridge piers against corrosion.

  • Impact on driving: Avoiding sudden potholes or road surface irregularities that could damage tires or cause accidents.

  • Premature deterioration: Reducing structural noise caused by the passage of heavy vehicles.

The key differentiator: Delivery and installation in record time (24–48 hours)

Unlike new construction projects, maintenance work on critical traffic arteries like the M-30 requires an immediate response capability to avoid paralyzing the city’s mobility.

To meet these demands, Cacesa’s operational strategy is based on a make-to-stock production model for its standardized product range:

  • Standardized models: We offer a catalog of 10 to 15 bridge expansion joint models, covering the full range of movements typical in civil engineering.

  • Immediate availability: By manufacturing continuously during the months of lower construction activity (winter), we have modules in stock and ready for shipment.

  • Logistics response: We can deliver anything from a single replacement module to over 100 units within 24 to 48 hours—a decisive factor for the companies awarded the maintenance contract for the M-30.

Two manufacturing philosophies: Stock vs. Made-to-order

This project on the M-30 highlights the two major strengths that coexist at Cacesa’s facilities:

  1. Standardized Systems (Bridge Expansion Joints): Finished product held in stock. The client selects the model based on the required range of movement, and the material is dispatched immediately.

  2. Custom-Made Systems (Elastomeric Bearings): Custom manufacturing based on technical drawings. Although finished bearings are not kept in stock due to the wide range of dimensions, critical raw materials—such as steel plates of various thicknesses, specialized coatings, and rubber/neoprene compounds stored under controlled refrigeration to prevent expiration—are stocked to enable the start of vulcanization in record time.

Quality assurance, EN 1337 standard, and CE marking

As with all our road infrastructure components, the manufacturing of the bridge expansion joints for the M-30 strictly complies with the guidelines of the EN 1337 standard and European durability standards.

Each batch undergoes testing for wear, fatigue, and shear resistance. CE marking accreditation and annual external audits of our factory certify that the components installed on the M-30 offer maximum resistance to continuous heavy traffic and chemical road maintenance agents.

Conclusion: Agile solutions for road maintenance

The use of Cacesa materials in M-30 maintenance work reinforces our market reputation: high-quality rubber compounds, competitive prices, and—above all—an ultra-fast supply service that enables maintenance contractors to carry out their work without schedule delays.
